The Legacy of Valentine’s Day… Wednesday, Feb 13 2013

Valentine’s Day, originally called Saint Valentine’s Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine is observed on the 14th of February every year. This Day is supported by many countries all over the World but is not a public holiday in most of these countries.

It started as a liturgical celebration of one or more early Christian saints named Valentinus. He was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were not aloud to get married and for ministering to Christians who were persecuted under the Roman Empire. During his imprisonment, he is said to have healed the daughter of his jailer Asterius. Legend states that before his execution he wrote “from your Valentine” as a farewell to her.

Today, Saint Valentine’s Day is an official feast day in the Anglican Community as well as the Lutheran Church. The day was initially associated with romantic love in the Middle Ages when the tradition of courtly love flourished. By the 15th century it had evolved into an occasion  in which partners expressed their love for one another by presenting flowers or offering confectionery and most of all sending greeting cards known as “valentines.”

Valentines Day symbols that are used today include hearts, doves and the figure of the winged cupid.

Juan Smith Retires: Tuesday, Feb 12 2013

Juan Smith Retires:

Springbok and Cheetahs loose forward Juan Smith has announced his retirement from rugby due to an ongoing Achilles injury which has hindered him since February 2011.

Smith was originally injured in the opening Super Rugby game in February 2011, ironically against the Blue Bulls as well and had to fight his way back through pain as well as operations, all the while never giving up the hope of returning to the field again.

He made a comeback in the pre-season victory against the Stormers on Saturday, where he played the entire second half in Polokwane against the Bulls, whereafter his coach Naka Drotske praised him and talked of how proud he was to have him ready for Super Rugby again.

Unfortunately the situation changed yesterday and a negative MRI scan confirmed the worst fears.

Smith confirmed the retirement, saying he was encouraged every time by the fans to try and return.

Smith’s career has been a LEGENDARY one and formed a great loose trio with Pierre Spies and Schalk Burger in his prime. Smith was the rock in Jake White’s Springbok team and starred in the World Cup victory in 2007. He also won the Currie Cup with the Cheetahs in 2005 and Tri-Nations in 2009 with the Boks.
